Empordà Wine

The Empordà-Costa Brava denomination of origin extends in northeastern Catalonia, in the province of Girona, and near 2 French Dos: Côtes de Roussillon and Banyuls. The Empordà DO includes 48 municipalities in 2 shires: Baix Emporda and Alt Emporda. The Mediterranean climate is influenced by the strong wind from the north that affects the vineyards, with an index of rainfall of around 600 mm. per year. The soil is poor, brown, and with hail.

The Empordà DO extends its vineyards over 2,000 acres, with only 41 wineries and 415 growers who prepare wines. The varieties grown for red wines are: Garnacha Tinta, ull de llebre, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and above all, cariñena, a strain that dominates the area. As regards white grapes, they produce: Macabeo and Garnacha Blanca, and a little muscat, Xarel·lo and chardonnay.
